So, how will faithful patrons and supporters be entertained at the fourth annual Sandy Point Benevolent Society 2014 Awards Banquet in New York on August 30th? How about being entertained by two of the most recognizable names in the entertainment business from the federation of St. Kitts and Nevis – Pat Ross and Lionel "Benjax" Benjamin. Pat and Benjax will perform with musical accompaniment by the Jupiter Band.
Both are well accomplished and, on stage, they project a synergy and melody that is second to none! These two musical and entertainment moguls have been the face of the federation for decades and both have used their musical talent and professional accomplishments to serve as ambassadors of the twin island independent federation in their own right. Given their invaluable contributions to nation building, SPBS is honoring both with its Distinguished Service and Alumni Award.
A native of the exciting Sandy Point community, Pat Ross blossomed into a stunningly beautiful young woman who immersed herself in the art form of music. By the time she was 18, Pat was the lead singer of the Dynamics band of Sandy Point and had clearly asserted herself as a trendsetter in the field of music.
In 1994, Pat performed in Brooklyn, New York where the demand for her music was so great that she returned to the studio to recapture the essence of her first love: music. Later that year, Pat released her first CD, "Stronger." She also produced five other hits namely: Dance, Dance Dance, Lord Don't Hide Your Face , A Message for You, Christmas With My Baby and Blue Moon.
Pat performed with many top Recording Artists such as King Arrow, Keith Lyn, Vic Taylor, Johnny Braff of Guyana, Lord Rhaburn of Belize, Mighty Sparrow and others. At a popular performance held at The Island Center on St Croix, the promoter declared that he had not seen such a large audience at the Center since Millie Jackson's performance years earlier. Pat Ross performed over three decades as a beauty queen and has 2 Vinyl Records and 6 CDs under her belt.
Truly, Pat Ross is a heavyweight in the music industry.
Benjax was known for his signature smooth velvet sound. Like Pat Ross, he was an entertainer and recording artist. He performed throughout the Caribbean, Canada and USA, and was an accomplished song writer for artist including Johnny Braff of Guyana. He was the irresistible voice behind such songs as “Have a Good Time”, “You’ll Cry”, “Feel It”, “Power Lies in You” and “Waiting For You”. His musical career has certainly been a high point of his life's sojourn. Benjax has 6 albums and 2 CD’s.
Benjax started his professional career around 1973 as a Math Teacher at the former Sandy Point High School now Charles E. Mills Secondary School. Benjax developed an early hunger to succeed as an independent business leader. That drive and vision materialized for Benjax in 1984 when he opened his very own supermarket.
Pleased by his success as a businessman and recognizing some of the needs in his community, Benjax opened a service station in 1985. “The service station was a challenge though, because there were four service stations in Sandy Point, which all failed”, he exclaimed, “So my idea was to operate a service station with a difference. "Benjax service did open with a difference in that it sells oils, tires, service accessories, bicycles and bicycles parts etc. “After Basseterre, the only other gas station was fifteen miles away. To have a service station in the proximity of Brimstone Hill, which was already becoming a hub for tourism activities, was a strategic move,” says Benjax.
Today, Benjax is a stable force in his home town of Sandy Point with his popular “B’s Super Market."
Please join us in saluting the invaluable contributions of these two ambassadors of our twin island state.
